A 23-year-old engineering student in Bengaluru has been booked for public nuisance after modifying his car with a fire-emitting exhaust system.
Arjun G Shenoy, a student at BMS Engineering College and a resident of Shanmuga Layout in Hosapalya, was arrested and later released on station bail.
Last Saturday, Shenoy drove his black hatchback (KA-53-MB-1715) to Church Street, where he deliberately accelerated, producing loud, disruptive noises and occasional bursts of fire from the exhaust. His antics attracted attention from pedestrians and business owners, many of whom came outside in annoyance. When confronted by a bystander, he quickly drove away.
A video of the incident was recorded by an onlooker and uploaded to social media, tagging the Bengaluru Traffic Police. Acting on the viral clip, Cubbon Park traffic police traced Shenoy’s vehicle and registered a case. He was charged under the Indian Motor Vehicle Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 281 (exhibition of false light, mark, or buoy).
Police have seized the modified vehicle and requested an RTO inspection report. Shenoy will need court approval to retrieve his car. In his statement, he admitted to purchasing the modified silencer-muffler online and installing it with a mechanic’s help.
