Former Karnataka MLA and doctor Anjali Nimbalkar saved the life of an American woman who suffered a medical emergency mid-air during a Goa–New Delhi flight, drawing widespread praise for her presence of mind and compassion.
Medical emergency at 30,000 feet
According to official sources, the incident occurred while Anjali Nimbalkar, an orthopaedic surgeon by training, was travelling to Delhi to attend the Congress party’s ‘Vote Chori’ rally at Ramleela Maidan. Midway through the flight, a foreign woman passenger complained of uneasiness and shivering before fainting and losing her pulse.
Recognising the seriousness of the situation, Nimbalkar immediately stepped in and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), successfully reviving the passenger. Fellow passengers and cabin crew assisted as she stabilised the woman during the critical moments.
Stayed by patient throughout flight
Sources said Nimbalkar remained by the passenger’s side for the remainder of the journey, closely monitoring her condition, offering reassurance and ensuring she received constant medical attention until the aircraft landed safely in Delhi.
After landing, the unwell passenger was shifted to a hospital by ambulance for further treatment. Airline crew members and passengers reportedly applauded Nimbalkar for her swift and selfless response.
Chief Minister praises ‘true public service’
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah praised Nimbalkar’s actions in a post on X, calling her response “a remarkable display of presence of mind and humanity”. He noted that despite stepping away from active medical practice and being deeply engaged in politics, she instinctively responded as a doctor when a life was at stake.
“Whether in power or not, leaders like Dr Anjali Nimbalkar stand as shining examples of true public service,” the Chief Minister said, adding that her actions reflected responsibility, compassion and leadership in its truest sense.
‘I only did my duty’, says Nimbalkar
Responding to the Chief Minister’s message, Nimbalkar said she had merely fulfilled her duty as a doctor. “It is my job and responsibility to serve whenever required,” she wrote, adding that the appreciation meant a lot coming from a leader known for social commitment.
The incident has been widely shared on social media, with many hailing it as a powerful reminder that medical training and humanity can save lives, even far from hospitals and clinics.
