Bengaluru: Even though Prime Minister Narendra Modi stormed to power by assuring Achche din in 2014 and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah dislodged BJP government in the state in 2013 by assuring all round development of the state, National Family Health Survey, (NFHS 4 conducted in 2015-16) for Karnataka reveal that both the governments failed to implement various social sector schemes effectively in the state. NFHS 4 data reveal some shocking factors about the way in which crores of people living in the state.
According to the data, only 42.6% of the rural households in Karnataka have proper sanitation facility. It is 77.3% in the Urban Karnataka. Adding to the woes of rural people, according to the survey only 32.1% families in Rural Karnataka have access to clean fuel for cooking. But one of the worst shocking factor revealed in the study is that compared to rural people, very few numbers of city residents have any health insurance which is very critical in today’s world.
According to the report, only 23.4% of city residents have any form of health insurance while it is 31.8% in the rural areas. According to the survey 73% of people of Karnataka yet to be brought under the ambit of any health insurance scheme.
Gender imbalance in literacy rate
The NFHS 4 states that one of the major achievements of the government is in improvement in the literacy rate which is key for social development. Women literacy rate has taken a leap from 59.7% in 2005-06 to 71.7% in 2015-16. Percentage of women having more than 10 years of schooling has
increased from 27.8% to 45.5%.
But, there again, a disheartening fact is that only 58.9 per cent of women in Urban Karnataka have more than 10 years of schooling which is very less compared to the other developed countries.
Adding to the woes, clear gender imbalance can be noticed in the literacy late. According to report, literacy rate of men in the state is now 85.71% which is 14% more than the female literacy rate.
