A man disguised as a saint’s devotee stole a ₹4.5 lakh gold ring from a 40-year-old on Bengaluru’s Church Street but was later caught. The accused, Dileep Salaar, used the guise of a religious follower to deceive and rob his victim, Pulkit, who works in a private finance firm and resides in Malleswaram.
The theft occurred on January 10 while Pulkit was chatting with a colleague. Dileep, dressed in a knee-length gown, adorned with malas, and carrying a satchel and saint’s photo, approached asking for donations. When Pulkit declined, Dileep became aggressive, grabbed his shirt, and checked for money. In the ensuing scuffle, he snatched Pulkit’s gold ring, claimed to have swallowed it, and fled.
Police apprehended Dileep on Residency Road a few days later. Investigations revealed he hails from Gujarat and pretends to be a devotee while begging, with his family selling toys at traffic signals. Contrary to his dramatic claims, Dileep had hidden the ring, featuring a ₹3.5 lakh emerald and ₹1 lakh gold band, in his satchel.
The recovered ring brought relief to the victim, showcasing police efficiency in handling theft cases amidst the city’s bustling streets.
