A frightening alleged scam attempt on Hunsur Road has sparked concern among travellers after a driver returning from Coorg in a rental car was chased for nearly three kilometres by men posing as loan recovery agents. The incident, shared in a now-viral Reddit post, has triggered widespread alarm about road safety and emerging fraud tactics in Karnataka.
‘Pull over, loan defaulted’
According to the Reddit user, the incident occurred while they were driving a Revv rental car back from Coorg. The journey took a disturbing turn when a scooter rider pulled alongside their vehicle, flashed what appeared to be an ID card, and demanded that the driver stop.
“Obviously, I ignored him,” the user wrote, sensing something was wrong.
The situation escalated when the rider cut in front of the car again, while his companion shouted for the driver to roll down the window. The men then claimed to be loan recovery agents, alleging that the car’s loan had been defaulted and that they were there to seize the vehicle on the spot.
Chased like a movie scene
The driver immediately realised it was a scam, as all rental documents were in order. However, before they could speed away, three more scooters reportedly joined in, surrounding the car.
“They literally chased me for 3 km, swerving in front of the car, trying to block me like we’re in a movie,” the user said, adding that they managed to click a photo of one of the alleged scammers.
Despite the intimidation, the driver continued driving and avoided stopping, eventually managing to get away safely.
Social media reacts: ‘Getting scary’
As the post went viral, users expressed shock at the brazenness of the alleged scam. Many called the incident “terrifying” and warned that such tactics could turn dangerous.
“Living here is getting scary day by day,” one user commented, while another said, “Avoid any engagement. If needed, insist on going straight to a police station.”
Several users urged the driver to report the incident to the local police, stressing that doing so could help prevent others from falling victim.
Police advice: Don’t stop, seek help
While there is no official police confirmation yet, law enforcement officials have repeatedly advised motorists not to stop for self-proclaimed recovery agents on the road. Any legitimate vehicle seizure, police say, must involve proper legal notices and coordination with authorities.
Travellers, especially those using rental vehicles, are being advised to remain alert, keep documents handy, share live location with trusted contacts, and head directly to the nearest police station if confronted.
The incident has once again highlighted how scam tactics are evolving on highways, turning routine drives into moments of real fear.
