Bengaluru: A fire broke out in the infamous Bellandur lake, the 900-acres of water body in Bengaluru south, once again on 3.30 pm, on Thursday. It was 10-15 meters away from the Srinibhagilu area of the lake where a fire broke out on January 19.

According to the residents, they found fire in the same place by 3.30 pm and called Bengaluru Development Authority and Fire Department. To douse the fire, 12 fire engines arrived at 5 pm. However, they could not reach the place immediately as they had to take permission from the defense ministry. The fire was brought under control by 7 pm, said an official.

The Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA), Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) and Karnataka Lakes Protection and Development Authority, and Urban Development Departments are taking care of this water source. However, they could not clear up waste, building debris, dry grass and chemicals which are being added to the water.

“The intensity of wind is comparatively less, which helped in dousing the fire early. We could not remove weed and grass because of the dearth of machines. We have decided to use weed pullers for the purpose. But, the vehicle owners have asked time,” said a BDA official.

Last time fire was doused after a 28-hour operation. In that, 6 regional fire officials, 10 fire officials, 76 staff and State 11 staff of Emergency Response Team had participated in the operation.
