Bengaluru: Celebrations ahead of the New Year turned into shock and distress for a family after a massive fire destroyed two high-end cars and other valuables in the early hours of last Tuesday night. The incident took place at Vaddarapalya in JP Nagar 8th Phase, where vehicles parked in front of a residence suddenly caught fire, leaving the owners devastated just days before the New Year.

According to preliminary information, the cars — a BMW and a Toyota — were completely gutted in the blaze. Sources said the fire is suspected to have been triggered by a short circuit, though the exact cause is yet to be conclusively established. The fire reportedly broke out from one of the vehicles and spread rapidly to the other within minutes, intensifying before residents could react.

Fire spreads rapidly, vehicles destroyed

Eyewitnesses said flames engulfed the first car swiftly and soon spread to the adjacent vehicle, creating panic in the residential area. By the time neighbours raised an alarm and attempted to douse the fire, both vehicles were already ablaze.

Fire department personnel were alerted and rushed to the spot to control the situation. Officials said it took considerable effort to bring the fire under control due to the intensity of the flames and the combustible materials involved. The vehicles were completely destroyed, leaving behind charred remains.

Residents said the fire occurred late at night, when most people were indoors, which helped avert casualties. The quick spread of the fire, however, raised concerns about safety in densely populated residential neighbourhoods.

Other valuables also reduced to ashes

Apart from the two cars, wooden planks stored outside the house for construction purposes also caught fire. These materials, which were stacked close to the parked vehicles, fuelled the flames and contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

The wooden planks were completely reduced to ashes, and parts of the exterior of the house also suffered heat damage. Officials said the presence of construction material outside residential buildings can pose an added fire risk if safety precautions are not followed.

Based on an initial assessment, the total loss from the incident has been estimated at around ₹3 crore. Authorities said a detailed valuation will be conducted as part of the investigation.

Timing adds to shock for family

The incident occurred just four to five days ahead of the New Year, compounding the emotional and financial distress of the affected family. Neighbours expressed sympathy and said the incident had cast a pall over what is usually a festive period.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as no one was near the vehicles when the fire broke out. Police said the outcome could have been far worse had the fire spread further or occurred earlier in the evening when people were moving around the area.

Police investigation underway

A complaint has been registered at the Konanakunte Police Station in connection with the incident. The car owner, Manjunath, told the police that the vehicles were parked outside his house and that the fire broke out unexpectedly in the middle of the night.

Police officials said an investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the fire. They are examining whether an electrical short circuit, battery-related issue, or any other factor triggered the blaze. CCTV footage from the surrounding area is also being checked to rule out any external involvement.

Fire department officials are expected to submit a technical report, which will form a key part of the police investigation.

Conclusion

The incident has once again highlighted the risks posed by electrical faults and fire hazards in residential areas, especially when high-value vehicles and combustible materials are parked close together. While the absence of injuries brought some relief, the substantial financial loss has left the family reeling. Authorities have urged residents to ensure regular vehicle maintenance and follow fire safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
