Several small hotels, darshinis and eateries in Bengaluru‘s busy commercial areas such as Majestic, Chickpet, KR Market and Shivajinagar are operating under conditions that could pose serious fire safety risks, according to a recent ground assessment.
Many of these establishments function in old, congested buildings with poor ventilation, limited airflow and few emergency exit options, raising concerns among customers and safety officials alike.
Cramped kitchens and narrow exits
In several eateries, kitchens are reportedly housed in small rooms with cooking equipment positioned close to entry and exit points. Owners say modifying these spaces to accommodate additional exits or ventilation systems is often difficult due to space constraints and rising rental costs.
Workers at some establishments described working in hot, smoke-filled environments where a lack of windows and inadequate exhaust systems make conditions uncomfortable, especially during peak business hours.
Customers too have expressed concern about overcrowded interiors and the absence of clear escape routes in the event of an emergency.
Fire officials raise concerns
According to fire department officials, many small eateries do not come under the regular fire clearance system because of their size, limiting routine safety inspections.
Officials warned that narrow lanes in areas such as Chickpet and KR Market can also make it difficult for fire engines to reach affected buildings quickly during emergencies.
They noted that ageing electrical systems, gas cylinders, poor ventilation and closely packed structures increase the risk of fires spreading rapidly from one building to another.
Plans for stricter inspections
Recent fire incidents in Bengaluru have renewed focus on safety standards in commercial establishments. Authorities are reportedly planning surprise inspections in vulnerable areas to identify violations and recommend corrective measures.
While fire officials can suggest improvements such as fire extinguishers, unobstructed exits and emergency preparedness measures, enforcement action falls under civic authorities and other regulatory agencies.
Safety remains a challenge
Experts say balancing business needs with safety requirements remains a challenge for many small establishments operating in older parts of the city.
However, they stress that improving ventilation, maintaining electrical systems and ensuring clear evacuation routes are critical steps to reduce risks and protect both workers and customers.
