Bengaluru: A potential Mpox (previously known as monkeypox) infection has been detected in Bengaluru, marking what is likely the first case of the disease in Karnataka this year.
The individual, a 40-year-old man, recently returned from Dubai and has been hospitalized at Victoria Hospital. Medical officials are actively investigating the case to determine further specifics and confirm the diagnosis.
Mpox gained significant attention in 2024, with notable outbreaks across Africa and other countries, including Thailand and Pakistan. In response, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the virus a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) in August 2024. India reported its first Mpox case in September 2024, and Kerala saw two additional cases last month.
The recent case has triggered heightened vigilance in the health community, as authorities work swiftly to identify possible contacts and prevent any spread. Health experts continue to stress the importance of monitoring symptoms and reporting any suspicious illnesses, particularly among travelers.
