Bengaluru: The police have arrested five people for fleeing with Rs 1.12 crore meant to be loaded into ATMs in the city last week.

The police have identified the accused as V Narayanaswamy, 46, of Uttarahalli, R.A. Narasimha Raju, 27, Rizwan Basha, 31, and Jagadish M, 33, all fromKamakshipalya, and E. Ravi from Ballari.

According to the police, the prime accused, the driver Narayanaswamy, 46, and custodian Narasimharaju, 27, were caught on Monday at Nelamangala while they were returning from a road trip to Goa, Mangaluru and Ballari.

The police said Narayanaswamy, Narasimharaju and Rizwan had gambling debts. They hatched the plan to steal the money, and took the help of Jagadish and Ravi. After going over their plan, Narayanaswamy allegedly decide to execute it on Monday January 29, as they had collected more cash than usual from shopping malls, eatery outlets and other business firms after a four-day holiday — a Karnataka bandh, followed by Republic Day, and then the weekend.

At Jnanabharathi, the accused asked the security guard to go buy them bananas. When the guard returned, there was no sign of the cash van.
