Hospitals in Bengaluru report a notable increase in flu cases among pregnant women, with at least two cases daily in recent weeks. Experts attribute the rise to immune system changes during pregnancy, seasonal conditions, and crowded gatherings.

“Pregnancy weakens the immune system, making expectant and postpartum women more susceptible to flu,” said Dr. Priya SP Patil, obstetrician at Altius Hospital. She highlighted that advanced pregnancy stages and pre-existing conditions like diabetes or heart issues further heighten risks, leading to severe symptoms and complications.

Dr. Usha BR from Fortis Hospital noted hormonal and physiological changes in pregnancy that suppress immunity and strain the respiratory system, increasing vulnerability. “We’ve observed flu cases jump from two per day to over ten weekly,” she shared.

Seasonal factors and lower night temperatures are exacerbating the problem. Dr. Shwetha Krishnamurthy from Sparsh Hospital stated, “Flu accounts for 30-40% of daily pregnant cases, and while cases might dip as February temperatures rise, January remains critical.”

Dr. Sachin Kumar of Sakra World Hospital emphasized environmental contributors, such as holiday travel and crowded festivities, which have intensified virus spread.

Doctors recommend preventive measures, including mask-wearing, avoiding crowded places, maintaining warmth, and seeking immediate medical help for severe symptoms like breathing difficulties or high fever.
