Bengaluru hospitals are witnessing a sharp rise in flu cases, with doctors attributing the increase to fluctuating weather, pollution, and low vaccine awareness. Cases have spiked by nearly 30%, with hospitals reporting 20-30 flu patients daily.

Dr. Aravinda GM from Manipal Hospitals, Jayanagar, noted that sudden temperature shifts create the perfect breeding ground for flu viruses. Elderly individuals and those with weakened immunity are the most affected, often requiring hospitalization.

Dr. Pavan Yadav of Aster RV highlighted a 100% increase in flu-related OPD cases. “Rapid weather changes lower immunity, making individuals more prone to infections like influenza,” he explained. Fortis Hospital’s Dr. Nasiruddin G reported a 20% monthly rise, with daily cases now at 4-5, compared to weekly numbers earlier.

Children facing severe impact

Paediatricians report a rise in flu and stomach infections among children. Dr. Leenatha Reddy of Kinder Women’s Hospital linked reduced immunity to lower vitamin D levels from limited sunlight. Dr. Nitin M of Motherhood Hospitals stressed the importance of vaccinations, as flu spreads rapidly in schools due to poor hand hygiene and mask non-compliance.

Doctors recommend maintaining hygiene, proper nutrition, and timely vaccinations to combat the flu’s spread. Staying hydrated, avoiding crowded places, and seeking early medical care can prevent complications.
