Bengaluru: In a massive action that is expected to save around Rs. 107 Crores for the State Government every month, the state Food and Civil Supplies Department has cancelled as many as 1.72 lakh BPL cards.
According to the data, the department cancelled 1,69,400 BPL cards and 3,080 Anthyodaya cards issued to senior citizens. This is an operation against misuse of BPL and Anthyodaya cards started on January 1, 2021. This is the brainchild of Shamla Iqbal, Commissioner of the Department of Food and Civil Supplies.
According to the officials, this drive is being carried out by collecting the details from the Income Tax Department and the RTO. “All the information of tax payers are now available with the help of Aadhaar Card. And, as the BPL cards are also linked to the Aadhaar, now the department is verifying the data and cancelling the BPL cards of the taxpayers,” explained officials.
As BPL cards are linked to the free healthcare service, various government schemes and welfare programmes, the government is likely to be benefitted a lot from this cancellation.
