Bengaluru: The Karnataka State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has ordered two surgeons and anesthesiologist of Fortis Hospital situated in Sheshadripuram to pay Rs. 23.54 Lakh as compensation to the bereaved family of a school principal who died due to medical negligence. Vidya Prasad was 45 when she succumbed to apathy.

Vidya Prasad had died on Febrauary 11, 2010 at Fortis Hospital in Sheshadripuram due to negligence by the doctors concerned.
Later, her husband H N M Prasad who is a High Court advocate and his children had lodged a complaint with the Karnataka State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission accusing the doctors of medical negligence. In their complaint they had said that despite telling the doctors that she had a heart ailment she was not provided with adequate care.
They had also mentioned that the hospital did not have a heart care unit to look into such cases and the hospital came up with one only after Vidya Prasad’s death. In addition, the complaint said, when her blood pressure went down the hospital did not have enough blood stock to resuscitate her. Even heart specialists were not available to assess her condition, it added. Eventually, Vidya who according to her husband was quite healthy when she consulted this hospital, died on treatment.
After investigating into the complaint, the Commission came to the conclusion that the death of Vidya Prasad was purely due to medical negligence and ordered the accused to pay Rs 23.54 Lakh damages within eight weeks to the victim’s husband and children.
