Karnataka has reported its fourth Covid-related death this month, raising fresh alarms across the state’s healthcare circles. The latest casualty is a 63-year-old male resident of Bengaluru Urban, who passed away on May 29 while receiving treatment in a private hospital within the BBMP limits.

According to health department sources, the patient was admitted on May 21 due to extreme fatigue. Despite being fully vaccinated against Covid-19, his condition worsened over the next eight days, ultimately leading to his demise.

Medical investigations revealed the man was undergoing chemotherapy following surgery and was suffering from advanced-stage buccal mucosa squamous cell carcinoma. He was also found to have pulmonary tuberculosis. The death certificate listed complications including thrombosis in the sagittal sinus and internal jugular vein, extreme weight loss due to cancer, and a coincidental Covid-positive status as contributing factors.

This marks the fourth Covid-related death in Karnataka in May alone. Two earlier fatalities were recorded in Mysuru, both involving men aged 63. The first died on May 2 after being hospitalized with underlying health issues, and the second on May 25, following a prolonged hospital stay due to chronic kidney disease, respiratory complications, and Covid-induced pneumonia.

As of May 31, Karnataka has 238 active Covid cases. On the previous day, 58 new infections were detected from 420 tests conducted, with a daily positivity rate of 13.8% and a case fatality rate of 1.7%.
