A Bengaluru-based Rapido driver, who used to work as an automation engineer, shared his journey from a technical career to gig work. The driver, who had been laid off from his previous job, explained his current situation during a ride with a passenger.
The conversation unfolded when the passenger, curious about the driver’s background, asked him about his previous work. The driver revealed he had worked as a full-time developer before losing his job, and now he drives for Rapido while continuing his search for a new role.
The passenger, reflecting on the conversation in a Reddit post, noted how the precarious nature of job security had led a skilled engineer to take up gig work just to make ends meet. “It’s saddening to see how easily companies make decisions that affect employees’ lives,” the Redditor wrote.
In the subreddit r/bangalore, discussions followed, with many users emphasizing that gig work, such as driving for Rapido, should not be seen as a lesser job. Some users even shared their own experiences, highlighting the flexibility and freedom gig work offers, despite the lower pay compared to traditional corporate roles.
Founded in 2015, Rapido, a Bengaluru-based startup, continues to grow, offering bike-taxi services and expanding to over 100 cities across India. For some, it’s a viable alternative to the uncertainty of corporate life.
