Garbage contractors move HC on direct payment to conservancy worker

Bengaluru: The High Court of Karnataka on Wednesday ordered issue of notice to the State government and the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on a petition filed by 82 garbage contractors questioning the government order for making direct payment to conservancy workers employed by the contractors, permitting local bodies to recruit only one conservancy worker for a population of 700.

Justice Vineet Kothari passed the order on the petition filed by S.N. Balasubramaniam and 81 other contractors. The petitioners have questioned the August 7, 2017, notification issued by the State government stipulating various conditions to the local bodies, including the BBMP, on recruitment and payment of wages to conservancy workers. They have also challenged the direct payment of wages to the conservancy workers who are working through the contractors since November 1, 2017.

Justice Vineet Kothari posted the matter to February 21 and asked the state and the BBMP to file their objections by that time.
