Bengaluru: The state government’s proposal to buy 30 acres of land in Goa to rehabilitate 1,100 Kannadiga families, which were evicted from the Baina beach recently may not get the requisite permission from Goa’s Department of Town and Planning, it is reported.

Following the eviction of these Kannadiga families, CM Siddaramaiah had recently announced that the state government would purchase around 30 acres of land in Goa and the displaced families will be given 20×30 site and financial assistance to build homes. He had also instructed the chairman of the Border Development Authority, Baburao Chinchansur, to prepare a detailed report in three days on the number of families involved, the land required for rehabilitation and the availability of land in Goa.

The Goan government which reportedly is short of land even for its own projects, may not be in a position to find land for Karnataka to rehabilitate the evicted Kannadigas families. Moreover if land was being sought near Baina bench, a No Objection Certificate from the Coastal Zone Management Authority is needed to build houses in the eco-sensitive zone, it is learnt.

“The authority has denied permission for many projects of the Goa government in the area to protect the marine life along its coastline. Moreover, Goa being a small state, it cannot be expected to provide basic amenities like electricity, roads, drinking water and underground drainage to the hundreds of houses that Karnataka plans to build near its beach,” a Goan bureaucrat was quoted speaking to DCHL adding that the state may not want to encourage settlement of migrants.
