Bengaluru: On the occasion of the 113th birth anniversary (December 29) of ‘Rashtrakavi’ Kuppalli Venkatappa Puttappa, popularly known as Kuvempu, Google has paid the respects to the legend with a special doodle.
The doodle shows Kuvempu sitting on a rock, in the typical Malnad environment- greenery, mountains, streams, birds all around and Kuvempu writing with utmost concentration. The word ‘Google’ has been written in Kannada.
Kuvempu was born at Kuppalli of Theerthahalli taluk of Shivamogga to Venkatappa Gowda- Seethamma couple on December 29, 1904. ‘Sri Ramayana Darshanam’ is his most popular work and a magnum opus which won first Jnanpith award for Kannada in 1967. This literary work also brought first Sahitya Academy and Pampa awards for Kannada.
Some other well-known works of Kuvempu are ‘Bommanahalli Kindari Jogi’, ‘Kolalu’, ‘Kathana Kavanagalu’, ‘Kala Sundari’, ‘Navilu’, ‘Pakshikaashi’ and other prose. ‘Jalagaara’, ‘Yamana Solu’, ‘Vaalmiki Bhagya Smashana Kurukshetra’, ‘Maharatri’, ‘Raktakshi’, ‘Birugaali’, ‘Beralge Koral’, ‘Shoodra Tapasvi’ plays, novels like ‘Kanooru Heggadati’, ‘Malegalalli Madumagalu’ and many other literary works which made the language richer.
He was honored with Jnanpith award, Kendra Sahitya Academy award, Padmabhushan award, Pampa award etc. The literary legend died on November 11, 1994. It can be remembered that the state government, in collaboration with the postal department brought a special post cover in memory Kuvempu, yesterday.
