Bengaluru: The state government will introduce book bank facility in every government Pre-University College for the students belonging to scheduled caste and scheduled tribe.
These book banks will contain all the textbooks of arts, science, and commerce sections as well as the language books. Students can utilize the books to study at home or in the college until the end of the academic year. The same copy will be distributed to other student in the successive year.
The pre-university students, especially the rural students are facing a dearth of textbooks every year. Many times students have to depend on Xeroxed copies of the text-books. Under this project, funds will be provided to the college principals to purchase books according to the number of students. He will be responsible for establishing book bank and maintenance. The government has earmarked Rs.4 crores for the project- Rs.2 crore for science and commerce and Rs.2 crore for arts.
A new software has been designed for the maintenance of books. The department officials can track whether the students have got the books, from their office itself. The information of purchased books by the college and information of students can be uploaded to the software. However, it is the responsibility of students to take care of the books, said an official.
