Bengaluru: Providing succor to the Kannada film industry, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated that the government planned to reimburse taxes collected on cinema tickets after the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on July 1.
The imposition of 18 per cent taxes on cinema tickets costing Rs 100 and 28 per cent on tickets costing over Rs 100 will further push up prices for the industry which is struggling to maintain its own with tough competition from other regional language movies. Hence the government is mulling reimbursement of taxes said Siddaramaiah after tabling the Karnataka Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill, 2017, in the Legislative Council on Monday.
Responding to a concern raised by Jayamala Ramachandra (Cong) who pointed out that the decision to tax films at 18% would hit small-time producers and those making award-winning films the chief minister said that his government was committed to the welfare of the Kannada film industry.
