Bengaluru: The state government on Tuesday referred the Karnataka Education (Amendment) Bill, 2017, which was earlier passed in the Legislative Assembly, to a select committee of the Legislative Council.
Members of the BJP and the Janata Dal (Secular) opposed some provisions of the Bill and even staged a dharna to pressurise the government to withdraw the Bill. They argued that the new bill would create panic among teachers, who were responsible for conducting examination.
Intervening in the debate, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah asserted that the Bill was tabled with an intention of upholding the sanctity of education and examination system.
Houses adjourned sine die
Both Houses of the State legislature were adjourned sine die on Tuesday. The seven-day session had begun with Governor Vajubhai Vala’s address to the joint session of both the Houses. The session had been extended by two days following demand by the Opposition, who expressed concern that more time was needed to debate drought and other issues.
