Govt will use Goonda Act against accused in sexual harassment of women: Home Minister

Bengaluru: The state government will establish an exclusive women battalion of Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) to prevent atrocities on women and also not hesitate to use Goonda Act against those who commit crime against women, according to Minister for Home Dr G Parameshwara.

More security steps for women's safety in Bengaluru-1Answering queries from Shashikala A Jolle of BJP and K Gopalaiah of JD(S) during the question hour in the Assembly on Tuesday, Dr Parameshwara said the state government has taken a serious note of atrocities on women and the number of atrocities on women has gradually come down during the last three to four years. “I am not telling that all is well by making this statement. The decrease in number of atrocities on women is a testimony of government’s seriousness in preventing atrocities on women seriously,’’ Dr Parameshwara said.

The home minister said the government has decided to increase the number of women police from five per cent to 20 per cent in the police department and open 35 women police stations in the state. “We have expedited the process of recruitment in the police department. We have filled up 21,000 vacancies of police constables and inspectors and among them, 160 sub inspectors are recruited for Bengaluru city. The process of recruitment will continue. The police have nabbed the accused in the recent sexual harassment case in Bengaluru. The accused has been remanded to judicial custody and the police are investigating the case,’’ the home minister said.

He said such incidents should not have happened in civilized society and the government has taken these incidents seriously. “Apart from taking action against the accused under Indian Penal Code, the government will use Goonda Act against the accused in such cases,’’ he said.

Earlier speaking in the Assembly, Shashikala A Jolle of BJP and K Gopalaiah of JD(S) said incidents of atrocities on women took place in Bengaluru and other parts of the state. They demanded the state government take measures to prevent atrocities on women. “There is a shortage of manpower at various police stations in the state. The government should not stop recruitment of police at any cost,’’ they demanded.

Emphasizing the need ensuring conducive atmosphere in society to facilitate people live in peace and harmony, they demanded the government to take stringent action against those committing crime against women. “Whenever atrocities against women take place, the government should not become complacent by merely suspending the officials of the concerned police station. The government should dismiss such police officials,’’ they said.

Illegal sand mining: Warning to govt officials

Minister for Home Dr G Parameshwara has announced in the Assembly that government would dismiss government officials found involving in illegal sand mining.

Replying a query from Leader of Opposition Jagadish Shettar during the question hour, Home Minister Parameshwara said the government would dismiss police, revenue officials, staffs of mines and geology department or others found involving in illegal sand mining. “The government will not hesitate to take stringent action against the government officials involving in illegal sand mining. The government has taken action in 30,000 cases and seized thousands of vehicles,’’ the minister said.
