Bengaluru: The Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024, enabling the formation of up to seven municipal corporations for governing the metropolis, will be officially implemented from May 15, according to the state government.
Despite the new law coming into effect, existing functionaries will continue to operate under the provisions of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Act, 2020, until the transition to the new governance framework is completed.
Until the division into multiple corporations is executed, the BBMP will function under the soon-to-be-formed Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), government sources confirmed.
A statement by the Urban Development Department explained:
“A notification was issued on May 14, declaring May 15 as the appointed date for the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024, in line with Section 1(3). Another notification will follow, identifying the current BBMP area as the Greater Bengaluru Area, as per Section 1(2) read with Section 3 of the Act.”
Further, under Section 7(5) and Section 360, powers from the BBMP Act will continue to be exercised by current officials until the new law is fully implemented.
Passed recently by both legislative houses despite opposition from the BJP, the Act aims to restructure the BBMP and introduce a Greater Bengaluru Authority to oversee coordination and citywide planning. The Act also extends the tenure of Mayors and Deputy Mayors to 30 months.
The Chief Minister will serve as the ex-officio chairperson of the GBA, with the Bengaluru Development Minister acting as vice-chairperson.
