Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday announced Gita Mahadeva Prasad would be Congress candidate in the forthcoming by-election to Gundlupet assembly constituency.

Geetha Mahadevaprasad to contest from Gundlupet?-1Addressing a meeting organized to pay tributes to former minister of cooperation late Mahadeva Prasad at Halahalli, the native of Prasad, the chief minister appealed the voters of Gundlupet assembly constituency to work for the victory of Gita Mahadeva Prasad in the forthcoming by-election to Gundlupet assembly constituency. “The success of Gita will be a tribute to late Mahadeva Prasad,’’ the chief minister said.

He said the demise of Mahadeva Prasad was unexpected. “Mahadeva Prasad was a great mass leader. Prasad’s good habits and helping nature made him people’s leader. Though Prasad is no more, the people of the state, especially the people of Chamarajanagar district would remember him for a long time. Prasad was my close friend. His death is a great loss for me,’’ he said.

He said becoming a popular leader would be a difficult task for a politician and it would not be possible to win election by merely spending money but it was easy for Prasad to win in the election since he was working for the welfare of people. “Prasad had all the qualities that are necessary for a people’s representative. Prasad had no problems either in family life or public life. Prasad was known for discipline in politics and diet. He was aware how to respond to people’s problems,’’ he said.

Recalling Prasad’s contribution for the developmental works worth thousands of crores of rupees in Chamarajanagar district, he said Prasad was striving hard to bring drinking water from Kabini to Gundlupet. “The proposal of Kabini 2nd phase is before the government. Male Mahadeswara was developed because of Prasad’s efforts. Prasad is a politician whom the public will remember for a quite long time. The voters of Gundlupet have to elect Gita if the developmental works commenced by Prasad are to be completed,’’ he said.
