Bengaluru: The High Court of Karnataka on Friday asked the Indian Dental Association to submit a representation to the State government for setting up a statutory body to monitor non-conventional tobacco outlets such as hookah bars and restaurants.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee and Justice P.S. Dinesh Kumar passed order while disposing of a public interest litigation (PI)L petition filed by the association.
Pointing out that a single smoking session from hookah causes more harm to the body than a single cigarette, the association had sought a direction to the State to formulate regulations to control hookah bars. The Bench asked the State to examine the petitioner’s representation within six weeks from its receipt.
