Bengaluru: The State Government has directed the higher education institutions not to make Kannada language compulsory for undergraduate students this academic year, until the final orders of the State High Court (HC).
After the interim order from the HC ordering the government that not to compel students who do not wish to take the Kannada language till further orders, the Higher Education Department has ordered colleges and higher education institutions not to make it compulsory.
However, an official said that it does not mean that we are not fighting for implementation of Kannada but issued the above order obeying the interim order from the court.
It can be recalled here that the petition filed by Samskruta Bharati Trust and others, questioning the compulsory Kannada language learning introduced by the government under the National Education Policy for undergraduate courses from the current academic year had attracted widespread opposition from Kannada organisations.
