Bengaluru: The Karnataka Government Secretariat (KGS) Club was, on Thursday, stopped from constructing a swimming pool or construction work of any sort in the Cubbon Park area by the High Court.
An order in this regard was passed by a division bench comprising of Justice John Michael Cunha and Justice H T Narendra Prasad, who were hearing a case based on a PIL filed by advocate Niyazuddin M K of the city.
The petitioner, according to The Hindu’s report, stated that the swimming pool constructrion work was cleared in violation of a law barring construction in the area and alleged that the pool was being contructed based on promises made by office-bearers during last year’s election. He also alleged that the club is operating while on government property, despite the lease having expired in the year 1997.
The Deccan Heral reported that the lease period offered to the Club, a private entity, was from 1987 to 1997 and was not renewed after the expiration.
Evidently, even the Karnataka Government Parks (Preservation) Act does not allow for any construction in the Cubbon Park area.
