HDK criticised for using luxury car while cutting down on govt. spending

Bengaluru: It was only recently that Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy put in place some measures to cut down expenses of the government.

Refraining from buying new cars, flying economy and cutting down on refurbishing and renovating government offices or residences, were some of the highlights which were intended to fulfill the promised farm loan waiver pegged at Rs 50,000 cr.

To set an example, HDK himself did not move to the state-sponsored house and decided to work from his own house at JP Nagar. But now, HDK has stoked a controversy after all the talks of austerity.

HDK travels in his private SUV – a top-end, customised Range Rover – costing about Rs 1.5 crore.

The vehicle used by HDK comes as a shocker given the fact that as CM, he is entitled to a vehicle of his choice and his predecessor chose a Toyota Fortuner, which costs a fraction of HDK’s personal SUV.

While many have criticised HDK for the same, TOI quotes officials in the CM’s office stating that HDK has been using the car for quite some time and hence, finds it comfortable, especially given the fact that he has certain health issues (he has undergone heart surgery twice) due to which he has been adviced not to strain his body.

HDK’s car has special shock absorbers and seats that enhance comfort.

But, on the other hand, some say that Kumaraswamy and his family believe that the said car is lucky and hence he must use it.
