Bengaluru: Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Friday, November 2, said that he would be shelving the proposal to allow the online sale and home delivery of liquor, that was mooted during the tenure of the previous government.
“After seeing media reports on the issue this morning, I spoke to officials over the phone. It (the proposal) was mooted during the tenure of the previous government before I became Chief Minister,” he told reporters here. Kumaraswamy said that there were discussions about implementing it at the officials’ level.
He added that the officials concerned were directed to put a stop to it immediately, as soon as he became aware of the issue.
“I have asked for a file on the decisions taken in this regard during the tenure of the previous government… we will not allow things so that certain people make money,” he added.
It was recently reported in certain sections of the media that the state government was considering a proposal similar to what the neighbouring state of Maharashtra had attempted recently, with an aim to increase the excise revenue and curb drunken driving cases. However, retailers in Karnataka are said to have expressed opposition to the proposal.
