Bengaluru: Karnataka Department of Horticulture has come forward to establish botanical gardens like Lalbagh in five places of the state.

The department has already started work on botanical gardens at Doddasagare of Korategere in Tumkur, Anakanoor of Chikkaballapur, Dattagalli of Mysuru, Tarakanahalli of Sirsi taluk in Uttara Kannada district and Kannamangala Garden of East Bengaluru.

“We decided to develop botanical gardens at 5 places with an objective of having such gardens in different places. There is a scarcity of funds to establish all gardens at once, so we will implement the project step-by-step. All five gardens will be ready in 5 years,” said a department official.

The botanical garden will be developed in the land belonging to the Horticulture Department. The local geographical status would be maintained and garden will be developed. Till date, the government released Rs.8 crore, which has been utilized to develop the infrastructure. The work on designing landscape map is completed, he said.

A committee was formed under the leadership of A N Yallappa Reddy to design the blueprint for the gardens. Scientists Sanjappa, Prof. Balakrishnegowda, Prof. Shankar Rao, Kerala Garden Officer Chandrashekar are the members. The comprehensive project has been designed with the help of Infrastructure Development Corporation (Limited) Karnataka (IDECK).
