A massive tree toppled near Ramakrishna Mutt in Chamarajpet on Sunday evening, bringing down an adjacent compound wall and crushing a bus shelter, triggering panic among commuters.

The incident occurred around 5 pm within the Bengaluru Central City Corporation limits.

Tree fall leads to wall collapse

According to fire and emergency services personnel, the huge tree fell first, causing a nearly 20-metre-long compound wall belonging to the State Bank of India premises to collapse.

The tree and the fallen wall crashed onto a nearby bus shelter, causing significant damage and creating a tense situation for people in the area.

Police sources confirmed that four two-wheelers parked nearby were damaged in the incident.

Major tragedy averted

Authorities said there were no fatalities. However, local residents reported that two persons sustained minor injuries.

Fire brigade officials noted that the gradual fall of the tree gave commuters enough time to move away from the bus shelter, helping avert what could have been a major tragedy.

The incident has once again raised concerns about ageing trees and deteriorating compound walls in Bengaluru.

Third wall collapse in three months

This is the third reported compound wall collapse in the city over the past three months.

Earlier incidents at Bowring Hospital and Vijayanagar Club reportedly claimed eight lives, prompting renewed calls for inspections and preventive measures to ensure public safety.

Rain forecast for Bengaluru

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thundershowers across Bengaluru until Wednesday.

Wind speeds are expected to range between 30 kmph and 50 kmph. Parts of the city, including JP Nagar and Banashankari, received light showers on Sunday.

Traffic police have advised motorists to exercise caution, particularly on waterlogged roads, and follow official traffic advisories.
