Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) plans to take a number of measures to ensure Bengaluru retains its lost glory, according to Mayor G Padmavathi.
Participating in an interactive programme, organized by Bengaluru Press Club and Reporters’ Guild here on Friday, Mayor Padmavathi said that she was proud to become the 50th Mayor of Bengaluru. “I am aware that one year is not sufficient for a Mayor to work for the development of Bengaluru but I am confident of taking up the required developmental works and contribute something for the development of Bengaluru during my tenure. I have already attended meetings at seven zones in the city and directed the engineers of the respective zones to take up all pending works,’’ Mayor Padmavathi said.
Penalty
Mayor Padmavathi has said that BBMP health department officials have started penalizing the residents for not segregating waste and throwing waste at public places. “The BBMP officials have started collecting Rs 100 as penalty from the residents for not segregating waste while handing it over to the conservancy workers. The BBMP had started this initiative at a few places in the city. It will be extended to other areas in the city. My objective is to achieve 80 per cent segregation of waste during my tenure,’’ Mayor Padmavathi said.
Safety measures
The mayor said that BBMP would take all measures to implement safety measures for the benefit of conservancy workers. She said the BBMP had provided uniform, sandals, gloves to the conservancy workers. “I want the BBMP health department officials to penalize the conservancy workers for not wearing hand gloves. It is the responsibility of the conservancy workers to wear hand gloves while removing garbage. I think they will wear gloves only if it is mandatory. I will direct the BMBP health department officials to penalize the conservancy workers who fail to wear the gloves while removing garbage,’’ she said.
The mayor said the BBMP has made arrangements to supply meals to conservancy workers. “We have signed a memorandum of understanding with ISKCON for supplying meals to the conservancy workers. We have paid Rs 1 core to the ISKCON for this purpose. We also spent Rs 1 crore for the equipment to supply meals to the conservancy workers,’’ she said.
Parks
The mayor said the BBMP would strive hard to ensure Bengaluru to retain its brands such as Garden City and Pensioners’ Paradise. She said the BBMP has prepared a plan to develop parks in the city. “The BBMP will take up cleaning of all parks in the city. The civic body will organize programmes for planting medicinal plants at all parks in the city,’’ she said.
The mayor said the BBMP plans to organize awareness on keeping city clean and ensuring greenery in the city. “We will involve schoolchildren in the awareness programmes,’’ she said.
Water supply
The BMBP has chalked out a plan to ensure water supply during the summer. “The BBMP had allocated funds for the repairs of tube wells at localities in the city to mitigate water woes during the summer,’’ the mayor said.
