Heavy rain warning for Bengaluru
Bengaluru: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued an orange alert for Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts, cautioning residents about the possibility of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms over the next two days. The alert follows a series of showers that have already brought traffic disruptions and waterlogging to parts of the city.
According to officials, the orange alert indicates a likelihood of “very heavy rainfall” in certain areas, urging citizens to remain cautious. The weather department has also asked civic bodies and district administrations to be on high alert to manage emergency situations, including flooding, fallen trees and traffic snarls.
Waterlogging and traffic disruptions
The recent downpour has already caused waterlogging in several localities such as Koramangala, Whitefield, Hebbal and parts of Outer Ring Road. Commuters reported long traffic jams during peak hours, while residents in low-lying areas complained of water entering their homes.
Bengaluru Traffic Police issued advisories urging people to avoid flood-prone stretches and use alternative routes wherever possible. Officials said teams have been deployed to clear fallen branches and ensure traffic flow in congested areas.
Preparedness measures by authorities
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) said that control rooms have been set up across the city to respond to emergency calls. Additional teams have been deployed to clear stormwater drains and prevent blockages that often worsen flooding during heavy rain.
The Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has also put rescue teams on standby in both urban and rural districts. Officials have advised people living near lakes, stormwater drains and under-construction sites to remain vigilant.
Rainfall pattern and forecast
Meteorologists noted that Bengaluru has been receiving excess rainfall over the past two weeks due to active monsoon conditions. The IMD said the current spell is likely to continue until the weekend, with rainfall intensity peaking between Friday and Saturday.
The department added that cloudy skies, strong winds and lightning activity are expected, particularly in the evenings. Temperatures are likely to remain below normal, offering relief from the usual September heat but increasing concerns of prolonged traffic chaos.
Appeal to citizens
Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors during heavy showers, avoid venturing near overflowing drains and refrain from parking vehicles under weak trees or electric poles. BBMP helpline numbers have been circulated on social media for emergency assistance.
Meanwhile, health experts have cautioned that waterlogging could increase the risk of mosquito-borne diseases, advising people to take preventive measures at home.
Conclusion
The IMD’s orange alert for Bengaluru underscores the need for both citizens and authorities to stay prepared as heavy rain continues. With weather conditions expected to remain unstable over the coming days, Bengaluru residents are advised to follow official advisories and take precautions to minimise risks.
