Bengaluru: The state government has directed all the deputy commissioners to take action against the private lenders who charge exorbitant interest rates causing a rise in the death of farmers in the state.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah while answering to the farmers issue said that his government would amend the Karnataka Private Money Lenders Act and the Prohibition of Charging Exorbitant Interest Act and take a strict action against private money lenders. The CM threatened to act against those lenders for allegedly forcing farmers to death with high interest rates. Action has already been taken against 86 lenders in the past one week for allegedly charging high interest rates.
Siddaramaiah while speaking on the farmers’ continued deaths in the state announced increase in compensation from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh.
He said that his government will never compromise when it comes to farmers’ issue and added that district officers have been asked to visit the houses of the 68 farmers who committed suicide since April 1 and provide them compensation.
