The Department of Posts, in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s NRSC, has launched DIGIPIN, a revolutionary 10-character alphanumeric code system to pinpoint exact property locations across India. Unlike traditional postal PIN codes that cover broader regions, DIGIPIN accurately maps individual 4m x 4m grid squares, offering unmatched location precision.

Citizens can generate their unique DIGIPIN by visiting the official portal https://dac.indiapost.gov.in/mydigipin/home, selecting their home on a digital map, and retrieving their code. Designed as an open-source digital address, DIGIPIN aims to improve logistics, emergency services, and digital inclusion, especially in rural and informal areas with inadequate address systems.

Key Features:

  • Precision: Pinpoints locations with 4-metre accuracy
  • Inclusivity: Ideal for rural/remote areas lacking structured addresses
  • Efficiency: Enhances delivery and emergency response
  • Privacy-first: No personal data storage
  • Offline support: Open-source logic can be used without internet

DIGIPIN complements—not replaces—existing postal addresses, serving as a digital overlay for better service delivery. It is expected to benefit e-commerce, logistics, and public services by reducing delivery errors and improving geographic accuracy.
