In a historic first, the Bengaluru Division of South Western Railway (SWR) successfully operated India’s first double-decker rake to transport Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs). The special rake carried 264 SUVs from Penukonda to Farukh Nagar (Haryana), generating ₹34 lakh in revenue for Indian Railways.
The ACT1 model rake, consisting of 33 specially designed wagons, features an innovative double-decker structure that maximizes capacity while cutting transportation costs. This eco-friendly and cost-effective method is expected to revolutionize vehicle logistics, providing an efficient alternative to road transport.
Officials stated that shifting vehicle transport from road to rail enhances efficiency, sustainability, and economic growth. The Business Development Unit (BDU) of Bengaluru Division played a key role in promoting this initiative among automobile manufacturers.
Senior railway officials, including Divisional Railway Manager Amitesh Kumar Sinha and Additional Divisional Railway Manager Parikshit Mohanpuria, inspected the rake at Penukonda station before its departure. This milestone marks a significant step in India’s rail-based logistics evolution.
