Bengaluru: Opposition Party Leader Siddaramaiah said that it was Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who launched Gareebi Hatao, and also specifically worked for upliftment of farmers as well as women.
Recollecting her contribution during a programme to mark her death anniversary at Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee office here on Sunday October 31, Siddu said that she earnestly worked to launch several effective development programmes including nationalisation of banks. It was because her nationalisation policy for the banks that poor could approach banks easily and also get benefitted by the same. This catapulted her to status of Goddess in the eyes of common man, he stressed.
Siddaramaiah said that she had a political will to root out corruption and poverty. She also introduced 20-point-programme to phase out financial inequality, he added.
He also remembered Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as an Iron Man as it is freedom fighter Patel’s birth anniversary and Indira Gandhi as an Iron lady.
