Bengaluru: Pollution levels in Bengaluru have been increased due to indiscriminate usage of vehicles, said a top official of Transport Department.

“Usage of vehicles indiscriminately has become a habit for some people in the city. It leads to increase of pollution levels in the city,’’ Transport Department Joint Commissioner Jnanendra Kumar said.

Kumar was speaking at a month-long pollution control programme organised at the Regional Transport Office, Jnanabharathi.

“The pollution in Bengaluru has been increasing day by day. Vehicles contribute a lot to the increase in pollution levels. Some people have developed a habit of using vehicles to go to short distance places. They have to go by walk to such places. It will not only help them to be physically fit but also reduces the pollution in the city,’’ Kumar said.

Jnanabharathi Regional Transport Officer Hemanth Kumar has emphasized the need for using public transport to reduce pollution in the city.

“The number of private vehicles has been increasing day by day. It leads to the increase of pollution in the city. Pollution can be controlled by using public transport vehicles and Namma Metro. Government’s efforts will be effective only when the public extend cooperation,’’ he said.
