Bengaluru: A 28-year-old motorcyclist lost his life after allegedly hitting an unlit speed breaker on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) in north Bengaluru during the early hours of Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Praveen, a native of Dobbspet, who was residing in Vidyagiri Nagar, Nagarabhavi. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.
Motorcycle loses control on dark stretch
According to police, the accident occurred around 2 am near MH Bar in Chowdeshwari Nagar on the Outer Ring Road.
Praveen was reportedly unable to notice the unlit speed breaker on the poorly lit stretch of road. His motorcycle hit the road hump at speed, causing him to lose control before being thrown off the vehicle.
Police said the impact was so severe that the motorcycle was flung nearly 20 feet into the air before crashing back onto the road.
Succumbed to severe head injuries
Praveen suffered critical head injuries in the accident. Passersby immediately rushed to help and shifted him to a nearby hospital.
However, doctors declared him dead while he was being transported for treatment.
Police said Praveen worked as an interior decorator.
Investigation underway
The Rajajinagar Traffic Police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances leading to the fatal crash.
The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety in Bengaluru, particularly regarding poorly illuminated speed breakers and inadequate street lighting on major roads.
Road safety experts have repeatedly urged civic authorities to ensure that speed breakers are properly marked with reflective paint and warning signs to improve visibility during night-time and reduce the risk of accidents.
