Belagavi: A political and cultural storm has erupted in Karnataka after actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan reportedly stated that “Kannada has its roots in Tamil.” The remark has provoked strong backlash from Kannada groups and BJP leaders, leading to protests and heated exchanges across party lines.
Outraged by Haasan’s statement, activists from the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike staged demonstrations near the INOX cinema hall in Belagavi, demanding a public apology. Protesters accused the actor of undermining the pride of Kannada language and its speakers.
On Wednesday, Karnataka BJP president BY Vijayendra launched a scathing attack on Haasan via a post on X (formerly Twitter), calling his remark “an insult to the self-respect of 6.5 crore Kannadigas.” He condemned Haasan’s alleged arrogance and ingratitude toward the Kannada community, especially after acting in Kannada films. “Loving one’s language should not come at the cost of insulting another,” Vijayendra wrote, criticizing Haasan for dragging actor Shivarajkumar into a glorification of Tamil.
In response, the DMK defended Haasan, accusing the BJP of distorting facts for political mileage. DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan claimed Haasan was merely citing historical linguistic research and not offering a personal opinion. “Kamal Haasan likely referred to historical links, not to demean Kannada,” he said, adding that BJP’s actions were aimed at creating rifts among communities.
The controversy underscores deep-rooted sensitivities around language, identity, and politics in the region.
