Kannada language absent in transactional discourse of postal banks!

Bengaluru: People of the state seem to be unhappy with the decisions taken by the Central Government regarding the postal offices as they are now postal banks. The main gripe is that the postal banks have not included Kannada as a medium of language in any of its forms or applications.

Even though the ruling of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in “Master Circulation – 2014”, clearly mentions that, along with English and Hindi, regional languages shall be given importance, the implementation of Kannada as a language in the transactional discourse remains absent in the postal banks.

According to the reports, even as the ruling of the RBI states that the forms, challans, and even the signage and information boards should be in regional languages, some of the villages where the postal services plays a major role, have still not used the Kannada language.

According to a postal service officer, the application, challans and other transactional papers are still in English and Hindi because those are the ones which were printed in the year 2011. The ruling on the usage of regional languages was implemented in the year 2014. He said that new forms and applications will have to be printed to include the Kannada language.

As a clarification to this, B S Venkatachala Bhatta, Assistant Director (Vig&FS), Karnataka Division, said that the department is not ‘anti-Kannada’, and that the implementation of languages depended on the requirement of that particular place.

He also said that the department had made sure that the Kannada language is given top priority and agreed that there were issues in the inclusion of the language in some parts of the state.
