Bengaluru: Kannada people have to follow the great personalities like Field Marshal Cariappa, Chief of Army Staff Thimmaiah, Sir M Visvesvaraya to improve their self esteem, according to Nadoja Dr Mahesh Joshi, Additional Director General, Doordarshan South.

Speaking at 61st Kannada Rajyotsava and Ethnic Day function organized by Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, Yelahanka, Dr Joshi said that Kannadigas have become apathetic towards developing their mother tongue. “The percentage of Kannada-speaking people in Bengaluru is around 28 per cent of the one crore population. I appeal other language-speaking people in Bengaluru to learn Kannada. I am not against other languages or other language speaking people but I want the people to give importance to Kannada,’’ Dr Joshi said.

To improve skills

Presiding over the function, Prof N R Shetty, Advisor, Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, has emphasized the need to improve the skills of technicians in rural areas. “Skill will provide job opportunities. If we create awareness to a plumber about technology, it will be like making him to have the benefits of skills. This what our Prime Minister Narendra Modi is conveying through Prime Minister Skill Development Programme. We have to join hands with Prime Minister for his Skill India Programme,’’ Dr Shetty said.

He announced the decision of Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology to provide training for technicians around Yelahanka at free of cost. “We have decided to train plumbers, masons, machinists and other technicians for four months. Our intention is to provide an opportunity for these people to hone up their skills thus earning good income. National Skill Development Authority will issue certificates to those who complete the four-month training successfully. We want to provide transport facility free of cost for those who want to undergo training here,’’ he said.

The music programme organized by Dr Appagere Thimmaraju and his team enthralled the students and staffs of Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology.
