Bengaluru: The Karnataka state government has appointed retired IAS officer Rakesh Singh as the new chairperson of the Karnataka Real Estate Regulatory Authority (K-RERA), filling the position that has been vacant since May this year. Singh, who retired as additional chief secretary of the Urban Development department at the end of May, is set to lead K-RERA for approximately five years, pending any future changes by the government.

Singh’s appointment comes after a period of speculation about his future role. A month prior to his retirement, there were rumours that he would be appointed to K-RERA. His appointment follows a competitive selection process that saw other retired IAS officers, including G C Prakash and Kapil Mohan, applying for the position. However, Singh’s strong connections with Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar reportedly influenced his selection.

Rakesh Singh’s Background
Rakesh Singh brings extensive experience to his new role, having served in various capacities within the Urban Development sector. His previous roles include significant stints with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA). His deep understanding of urban development issues and regulatory frameworks is expected to be an asset as he takes on the chairmanship of K-RERA.

As the new head of K-RERA, Singh will be stepping into a challenging role at a time when many home buyers have expressed dissatisfaction with the regulatory authority. His experience in managing urban development and regulatory issues will be crucial in addressing the concerns of the public and restoring confidence in the authority.

Responsibilities and Expectations
Under the Karnataka Real Estate Rules, Singh is entitled to the salary and allowances of the chairperson, as specified in the order issued by the Housing department. His tenure will be closely watched as he works to enhance the authority’s effectiveness and address ongoing issues in the real estate sector.

The appointment of Singh is expected to bring renewed focus to K-RERA’s operations and potentially improve the authority’s handling of complaints and regulatory oversight in the real estate market. Singh’s leadership will be crucial in navigating the complex challenges facing the real estate sector and ensuring that the authority meets its mandate of protecting home buyers’ interests.
