Bengaluru: The State Government will begin distributing boiled rice (kuchalakki) to ration card holders in the districts of Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada through the Public Distribution System (PDS) from January 1, 2023. Every month, 5 kg of boiled rice will be given to each family.
The everyday users of kuchalakki from the coastal area have been asking for this for a very long time, said Social Welfare Minister Kota Srinivas Poojari. Speaking to mediapersons, he said, “To procure kuchalakki, paddy will be purchased and processed. They need at least 1 lakh tonnes of boiled rice every month to supply to the three districts.”
He said that a support price of Rs. 2,040 per quintal of boiled rice had been set by the Union Government. “The State Government has also announced support prices for a few kuchalakki varieties. We hope to buy 13 lakh quintals of paddy, and we are optimistic that we will obtain at least 8.5 lakh quintals. The State Government will contribute an extra 500 rupees,” he said.
The Minister also added that more funds is required to buy karate uniforms for female students. Currently, they have already spent Rs. 176 Crore, and he noted that they still need another Rs. 18 Crore because they will start giving karate lessons to Class 6 students this year.
