Concerns over the stagnation of development and commerce in Coastal Karnataka were voiced by Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, who expressed hope for a transformative change in the forthcoming general elections. Addressing reporters at Sahyadri College, Shivakumar emphasized the pressing issue of unemployment driving youth migration to urban centers and abroad for jobs, urging voters to opt for change to enhance their livelihoods.
Highlighting the region’s socio-political landscape, Shivakumar lamented the disruption of societal harmony for political mileage, citing the manipulation of emotive issues by the BJP instead of prioritizing development. He underscored the Congress’s commitment to fostering development in the area, citing recent budget allocations tailored for coastal Karnataka and the fishing community to stimulate job creation.
Concerns were also raised about the merger of regional banks with those from northern India, prompting Shivakumar to urge locals to consider the broader implications. He announced the participation of AICC officials in an upcoming Congress party workers’ convention.
Responding to queries regarding BJP protests over a controversial school case involving an MLA, Shivakumar affirmed the independence of the legal process, asserting non-interference in police investigations. He rebuffed BJP accusations of favoritism towards Muslims, citing budget allocations for their welfare as necessary and non-partisan.
Regarding electoral competition in Bengaluru Rural, Shivakumar remained confident in incumbent MP DK Suresh’s popularity and grassroots support, dismissing concerns raised by opponents from JDS and BJP. He welcomed political challenges, drawing from his own electoral experiences and expressing confidence in voters’ judgment.
On the selection of Lok Sabha candidates, Shivakumar revealed ongoing discussions and surveys, indicating that the final list would be prepared subsequently.
