The 11th edition of International Yoga Day on June 21 is set to be celebrated on a grand scale in Karnataka, with major events planned in Bengaluru and Mysuru. According to Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, around 3,000 participants are expected at a large yoga gathering at Vidhana Soudha, the state’s legislative seat.
The central event, running from 6 AM to 8 AM, will be inaugurated by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot. The session will include a 45-minute yoga practice following the common protocol developed by the AYUSH Ministry. The event, titled “Yoga Sangam,” is being held in collaboration with yoga associations, community organizations, and government departments.
High-profile attendees include Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, various ministers, lawmakers, and renowned yoga experts from across Karnataka.
Simultaneously, yoga sessions will be organized in all district and taluk headquarters. In Mysuru, a Yoga Mahakumbh at the historic Mysore Palace grounds is expected to draw about 15,000 participants. Additionally, 300 Ayushman Health and Wellness Centres in rural Karnataka will host localized yoga events.
The state has also initiated a 100-day countdown campaign with national-level yoga competitions, spearheaded by the AYUSH Department and the Government Ayurveda Research Centre in Mysuru.
In a significant development, the Karnataka government has requested the Centre to designate Mysuru as a ‘Yoga District’ — aiming to have at least one yoga practitioner in every household.
Karnataka plans to contribute 10,000 of the 100,000 nationwide Yoga Sangam events promoted by the Centre.
