Bengaluru: Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, declared that his government has opted to revoke the implementation of the National Education Policy, 2020, within the state. Mr. Shivakumar shared on ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter), “Upon taking office, we committed to canceling the National Education Policy, and we stand by that commitment. Why the rush to enforce NEP in Karnataka first? Why hasn’t NEP been executed in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh?”

Further emphasizing, he remarked, “Karnataka’s education system serves as a national model. Bangalore’s status as the IT hub today and numerous state residents achieving success abroad are due to our education system.”

Previously, on Monday, Karnataka’s Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, stated that the National Education Policy (NEP) would be discarded beginning the next academic year in the state. He clarified that the NEP, previously instituted by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, would be entirely annulled from the subsequent academic year.

“The abolition of NEP necessitates some preparatory measures. By the time election results were released and the government was formed, the academic year had already commenced… NEP was maintained this year to prevent disrupting students midway through the year,” the Chief Minister explained.

He further noted that NEP had garnered opposition from students, parents, teachers, and lecturers alike.

Back in July of this year, Karnataka’s Minister of Primary Education, Madhu Bangarappa, declared that the state education department had chosen not to adopt the National Education Policy (NEP), opting instead for the implementation of the State Education Policy (SEP).

It is important to mention that the NEP 2020, introduced in July 2020, outlines foundational principles for an overarching transformation in India’s education sector, spanning from schools to doctoral levels.
