Karnataka Health Department to Track Heatstroke Cases Amid Rising Temperatures
With temperatures soaring across Karnataka, the Health Department has initiated tracking and monitoring of heatstroke cases starting this month. To ensure immediate treatment, select hospitals will be converted into specialized heatstroke treatment centers, particularly in Dakshina Kannada, where temperatures have already exceeded 40°C.
Key Measures Taken:
✅ Special heatstroke treatment rooms to be set up in taluk hospitals
✅ Air-conditioned rooms equipped with essential medicines, fans, and emergency supplies
✅ Specialist doctors on alert, with district health officers (DHOs) reviewing preparedness
✅ Doctors in all taluk hospitals instructed to remain on high alert
A senior health official confirmed that while no heatstroke cases have been reported so far, Karnataka had over 600 heat-related illnesses last year, mostly heat rashes and sunburns.
Heat Advisory for the Public:
☀️ Stay Hydrated – Drink plenty of water even if not thirsty
⚠️ Watch for Symptoms – Dizziness, excessive sweating, nausea, confusion – seek help immediately
👵 Check on Vulnerable Groups – Children, elderly, and those with medical conditions should stay cool and hydrated
🥗 Eat Light & Nutritious – Consume hydrating foods like fruits, salads, and yogurt; avoid heavy and spicy meals
👕 Dress Smart – Wear light, breathable fabrics
⏳ Avoid Peak Heat Hours (12 PM – 4 PM) – If stepping out, use an umbrella, hat, or sunglasses
The Health Department urges residents to follow these precautions to stay safe during the intense summer heat.
