Bengaluru:  As the pandemic’s second wave grips Karnataka, a record 39,047 new Covid cases were registered in a day, with 229 deaths across the state, said the state health bulletin on Wednesday.

“With 39,047 new cases registered on Tuesday, the state’s Covid tally shot up to 14,39,822, including 3,28,884 active cases, while recoveries increased to 10,95,883, with 11,833 discharged during the day,” said the bulletin.

As epicentre of the pandemic in the state, Bengaluru reported 22,596 fresh cases on Tuesday, taking its Covid tally to 7,10,347, including 2,24,152 active cases while 4,80,055 recovered so far, with 4,530 discharged in the last 24 hours.

Of 229 lives lost to the virus in a day, 137 are from Bengaluru, taking the state’s death toll to 15,036 and the city’s toll to 6,139 since the pandemic broke out in mid-March a year ago.

Among districts, number of new cases were 1,759 in Mysuru, 1,194 in Kolar, 1,174 in Tumakur, 1,106 in Ballari, 1,001 in Hassan, 935 in Mandya, 901 in Kalaburagi, 732 in Bengaluru Rural, 683 in Chikkaballapur, 664 in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi and 654 in Dharwad, with the remaining spread in the remaining 18 districts across the state.

Of 2,192 patients in the intensive care units (ICUs), 842 are in Bengaluru hospitals, 354 in Kalaburagi, 159 in Tumakur, 122 in Dharwad, 101 in Belagavi and 81 in Shivamogga district across the state.

Out of 1,71,997 tests conducted across the state during the day, 17,226 were through rapid antigen detection and 1,54,771 through RT-PCR method.

Positivity rate rose to 22.7 per cent and case fatality rate to 0.58 per cent across the state on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, 1,33,077 people, including 60,280 senior citizens and 62,139 in the 45-59 years age group were vaccinated during the day across the state.

“Cumulatively, 92,40,078 beneficiaries, including healthcare workers and frontline warriors have received the jab till date since the vaccination drive was launched on January 16 across the southern state,” added the bulletin.
